    Research Notes:
Several years ago I located the original die punch that was used to produce this countermark. I published an article with my findings in the TAMS Journal.
Smalley, Ellis, Council Grove: Donation: An Iron stamp containing the monogram of the Old National Reform Party, bearing the words "Vote the Land Free" ...
From the Kansas State Historical Society:
The stamp donated by Ellis Smalley is indeed in our collection. It was donated in 1882 and its accession number is 1882.15. According to the database, it is not cataloged, so I don't have much information about it. I found the following clipping in the accession file, from The Capital (July 7, 1882) "General News from the State Departments. Historical Society. Mr. Ellis Smalley, of Chicago, has sent the State Historical Society the stamp, made of steel, of the old National Reform party, which was organized in the city of New York in the year 1844, having for its object the securing to actual settlers government land in limited quantities. The stamp bearing the words 'Vote the Land Free' was used to impress the motto upon coin in active circulation, thereby to attract the attention of the people and to compel the recognition by the press and the party its objects. Mr. Smalley concluded the letter he sent with the stamp by saying that he trusted that in the near future coin may again be mutilated with the words 'Vote For Land Limitation.'
Note: The "Land Limitation" counterstamps [that Smalley mentioned] were in fact issued, and I have sold two of them on eBay over the years.
